Y Section Disaster Response Back To Our Projects List

Y Section Disaster Response

Location: Y Section, Khayelitsha, Cape Town - June 2015

Project Type: Disaster Response

Project Description: In June 2015, a fire was accidentally sparked in the Y Section of Khayelitsha.  This area lacks formal electrical connections, and the fire was most likely caused by the dangerous fuel sources that residents are forced to rely upon, such as parrafin and candles.  The fire destroyed five shacks before it was contained.  In response, Ikhayalami worked swiftly to provide building materials from our Disaster Response Fund to help shelter the families that were rendered homeless by the flames.  Fire kits were provided by the City of Cape Town, and our partners ISN and CORC collaborated to complete the construction process.

  • Goals:
    • Provide emergency relief to five families by providing building materials for an upgraded, fire resistant shelter
    • Raise awareness of Ikhayalami’s Disaster Response Fund
  • Impact:
    • Provided shelter to five destitute disaster victim families
    • Created awareness amongst Khayelitsha residents about Ikhayalami’s Disaster Response Fund and our fire resistant building materials
  • Project Collaborators: CORC, ISN, City of Cape Town
